The Rudder Room
The main rudder room of the Prinz Eugen.
Facing aft in the Prinz Eugen's main rudder room, Oberes Plattformdeck, compartment I 6.29. The ship was steered by turning the threaded middle shaft shown at the bottom of the photo, just to the right of center. The shaft moved two pistons located on either side of it, one forward and one backward, which turned the single rudder through a linkage. The pistons are seen on either side of the threaded shaft and the starboard linkage is seen at the bottom, left side of the photo. The portside linkage runs parallel with the port piston. The positioning of the pistons indicates that the rudder is turned to port.
